SMR and XP

I have a few MPEGs using MS-MPEG4 v2 compression that dont seem to work for me. Back when I had 98SE they would only play sound like they do now, my mate suggested I download an SMR patch which ended up solving my problem. I tried again with XP but still I get no picture and just the sound. Im not sure what it is I actually need. Can someone clear this up?
