About BeOS Max Edition:
BeOS 5 PE Max Edition is Based on BeOS 5 PE with a number of drivers, add-ons, Athlon XP Patch , P4 Boot img , software. It includes new development tools from the OpenBeOS team Web site, but you will also be able to select the old tools. And contains only freeware and shareware demos. All code it contains is legal under the MIT, GPL, or LGPL licenses.

In my opinion BeOS isn't a bad 'alternative o/s' and with this new release there's no excuse not to give it a try :D

Whoa! I had tried the earlier edition and thought it was dead after that.

Looks like it's back. I think I might give it a shot.

Heh it is dead. Be Inc. was purchased by Palm a while back, and they decided to ditch BeOS, but thankfully the OpenBeOS team have taken the PE (Personal Edition .. free version basically :) ) and added a hack of a lot of drivers and fixes and released it.
PE was 50mb, this new version is 200mb+ :D

It seems like it could possibly be one of the most functional alternatives to windows (from past experience i think BeOS is great!)
Palm just need to sort out the full version for opensourcing.

yeah yeah :D

Let me know how it all works out anyway, I don't want to grab 200-odd mb via my almighty 56k just yet :)

Downloading it right now... Does it install just like the original PE edition? I mean in a 512 MB file in a Windows folder, which you had to start up with a bootable floppydisk. Or does it install just like Linux, like creating a partition(s) with a filesystem.

it should install "in a file" as the old personal ed. used to..im sure there'll be some more info in a readme or something once its downloaded :)

I'm downloading it now also - Testing it on VMWare as well :D

It doesn't work on VMware as per the site! :(

And my partitions are all NTFS

make a seperate FAT32 partition perhaps ?!
use an old HD ?
*slaps VMWare for being inept*

Don't have any old HDDs lying around ... and creating a new FAT32 partition means I have to resize the existing ones ... maybe later :p

I finally managed to download the thing. Took me 4 times of trying (WinAce came with a CRC error, it turned out that my harddisk was full and it couldn't complete the whole package, but it did mark it as 'downloaded')

well hurry up and tell us what it's like, dammit! :p
I can't get a decent conenction speed for it over my 56K :(

Its going to be superb
the old PE5 was excellent, i remember installing it and having IRC + web + mail + WebCam + TVCard + GeForce @ 1280x1024 32bps all working within 5 minutes, all this new package is, is the PE5 with a hell of a lot of new apps/fixes etc (MOZILLA! YEHAR!..ahem)
So it should be good :p

YYIp ... It won't instal in vmware - I'll be setting up a new HD for it.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
