i woke up this morning turned my comp on and i get a black screen that says "Windows could not start because the following file is corrupt or missing: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

"You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original setup cd-rom, Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

anyone have ne clues what i can do, i cant lose that data i have on there so i cant format it, when i try the repair thing it just takes me to like a C:\Windows dos prompt type thing and i dont know what i can do, i need help with this bad

i also ran the maxtor powerdisk diagnostic tools and it "passed" the test

Sounds like you need to reinstall the operations system.

If you are using windows xp or 200 do the following :

Use a windows 98 boot disk and re-install windows from the dos promt.

Go to the CD drive.
then go to the i386 directory
then type WINNT
windows should beging setting up

Before formatting anything (that'd be my last resort!)
Have a quick look here for a quick way to Repair XP
Scroll down to the section about XP Repair Install
;)

anything but format, yes ive got 50gigs of stuff i cant get back if i have to format, 2nd maxtor drive in a year thats died on me, i just love em

you can re-install windows WITHOUT FORMATING, just follow the instructions that i posted earlier and choose to repair the OS rather than install a new one.

make sure you create a new partition for backup next time mate.
that way you'll be sure that you won't lose files when you re-install windows (if needed).

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
