Pop-Up Messenger Ads

Is there any way to stop those naggin little messages that people send to you via the messenger service? i got a win xp machine without a trace of spyware and i get loads of them suckers all the time. Is it as easy as disabling the messenger service. Would this affect anything else i might use on the said system?

unless your on a network that uses the service there is no adverse affect
