Hey I am building my first computer and was wondering if there is a MAJOR difference between OEM ram and Name Brand like Crucial etc. I am planing on using 512 megs of DDR PC2100.
Thanks.

The difference is PRICE $$$ Brand Name RAM costs a fortune but the only difference is that Brand Name is guaranteed to work when you bring it home. Even though most stores give you a guarantee for a short while Anyway.

Major difference no, minor difference yes.

what happened to your nick, couldn't think of anything more original?

My guess is your going to use a AMD processor maybe ????

just messing with u :D

Good questoin as the actual manufacturers that make RAM, you could count on one hand, but you will see many companys labelling or branding the RAM.

Generally, as long as it runs at the speed you require.. there isnt any difference.

I've had generic RAM and branded, and HAVE NOT seen any difference. RAM is RAM, dont matter if its called Mr Pinkys RAM or unlabelled.. its the spec of the RAM thats important.

I would personally go with the branded RAM just so that you have someone to scream at if things go wrong.

Also piece of mind of knowing where it came from (sort of)

Nick???

Original Nick Hugh,
Well that the day that I came up with it was a very long day for me.

And I use Generic RAM myself anyway.

Athlon XP 1800+
ECS K7S5A
256 MB DDR266
15 GB Maxtor 7200
Geforce2 MX200 (Oc'd as far as possible with coolbits)
Sony 16x DVD-ROM
LG 24x10x40x Writer

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
