NYC has a fairly built up subway system... Of course there's also graffiti, and criminals to deal with on the subways (aka muggers). Elsewhere in the country, this isn't the same thing however. There's also (outside of the north East Coast), large areas of country in this country... This itself makes mass transit another matter...
Just for example, Albuquerque itself is a fairly large city of over 700,000 people. However, New Mexico in general, I heard that on average (for the state), houses are about 3/4 of a mile away from each other. Once one goes out into the rural areas, it'd be kinda difficult to supply both decent, as well as convenient mass transit. Never mind, mass transit that runs 24/7... Even in Albuq, beyond work hours (aka 6 pm or so), there isn't much support for people to have lives of their own. It's largely setup (on the bus system) to get people to work and home, but otherwise... Some streets like Juan Tabo also don't see service more often then 1 bus going by every 80 minutes (and more like once every 4 hours on Sundays).
Where my parents live, it's a 20 mile drive to the grocery store, and an 60-80 mile drive to the closest mall. The nearest town is 4 miles away, but it's also small and lacks most things one could look for when driving in town... Some "town" centers are nothing more then 2 houses and 1 corner store  Then one can drive a long way without seeing signs of civilization before hitting the next... Does effect certain possibilities
