How about good old "net send"?

Start-> Run -> "net send computername enter your message here"

Replace computername with the workgroup name to mass message the whole workgroup

If there are also Win9x mahine on the LAN, make sure to open the winpopup program to send and recieve those messages

My dad found that tool which is ideal, cn use messenger smilies etc. will do the job for now - not sure about eh shareware limitations, but may be worth purchasing./
