Personally I use XNews as a news reader, it's a bit hard to use the first time, but it way better than outlook! It handle thread for binary files and permit you to download entire messages thread before decoding them to files which reduce the chance of loosing your files.
You can have four active connections at the same time but you can hava has many newsgroup open once they're loaded.
You can get it from ww.download.com and it's totaly free!
