3. F.A.Q. - Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------------------
a) The tool does not remember the last refresh rate values, I entered, when I
restart the tool. What does this mean?
- This is normal! The tool cannot detect the current refresh rates, it only sets
them internally. To be sure, if the refresh rates, you previously set are active
now, please use your monitors on screen display (OSD) or goto "System Control"
-> "Display Settings" -> "Advanced" -> "Monitor" to be sure.
b) I cannot select certain resolutions anymore. They have disappeared from game
menus or from the Windows display settings menu. Why is that?
- You probably selected a refresh rate, your monitor or its driver cannot take.
Select a lower refresh rate. Direct3D and DirectDraw don't want refresh rates
above 85 Hz together with NT-based systems. The tool has a good reason, when
warning the user before selecting refresh rates above 85 Hz!
c) The Detonator version could not be found. What can I do?
- First, try to select your Detonator version manually from the "System
information" tab. If that doesn't work, you seem to have an unclean
installation of the Detonator driver. Please uninstall it using the appropriate
method: Goto "System Control" -> "Software", select the Detonator package and
remove it. Reboot, reinstall the Detonator driver, reboot once more and retry
the tool. If that doesn't help, make sure, to have the newest Detonator driver
installed, this tool supports.
d) Why do I always get "Unknown registry error occured." messages?
- Make sure, that you have administrator rights. You need full access to the
Windows registry for the tool to work correctly. If you have all those rights,
try to reinstall your detonator driver cleanly.
e) Why is it dangerous to set refresh rates above 85 Hz via the fix tool?
- It is only dangerous for Direct3D and DirectDraw modes (even if your monitor
could take those rates), because the resolutions with too high refresh rates
may not be available anymore after using the fix tool. That means, they may
disappear from game menus and even from the Windows display settings. Direct3D
seems to have some kind of limitation, where OpenGL handles refresh rates
above 85 Hz correctly. So don't choose higher refresh rates when using Direct3D
or DirectDraw.
f) Can I use nVidia's "Refresh Rate Overrides" (since Detonator 40) together with
this tool?
- Yes, you can, as long as you regard the following rules:
* Don't set a lower refresh rate in the nVidia settings than in the fix tool
settings. If you do that, the specific resolution will not be initialized
correctly anymore, what makes hardware damage at least possible.
* The nVidia settings take only effect on Direct3D modes. OpenGL is not
affected.
* The nVidia settings override the refresh fix settings, as long as they are
higher.
* You may set higher refresh rates than 85 Hz in the nVidia settings.
g) After I used the fix and rebooted, I have a strange desktop resolution. What
can I do?
- This does not mean, that the fix did not work. If Windows asks to correct the
resolution settings, answer "No" and adjust your resolution manually from the
Windows display settings.
h) The program seems to have no effect on my system. What can I do?
- Uninstall the Detonator driver cleanly (from "System Control" -> "Software").
Then reboot and let Windows detect and install its Microsoft display driver.
This will happen automatically in the background. Reboot a third time.
Reinstall the nVidia Detonator driver and reboot again. Have a fourth reboot
to be sure and retry the fix.
i) Why doesn't the TV out work properly after using the fix tool?
- Sorry, but there is no solution, yet. Please contact me via ICQ, if you are
willing to do some tests for me, since I don't have a TV out to test with.
j) I have more than one display device connected to my card and I want to use
nView. How can I set different refresh rates for each device?
- This is not possible, yet. The refresh rate settings are set for all devices.
k) I still have questions. What can I do?
- If you read through this F.A.Q. and it could not help you, you may write an
e-mail to "support@sheep-design.de".
Its not for everyone but I bet you never read these huh?
