Making a very nice site!

I am very new to this stuff. Okay that was a lie. I am 14 now and made my first site when I was about 11, without anybody's help. I just made em for fun, and my latest one.

But they are just crap compared to the nice, snazzy ones now-a-days.

Please can people tell me how to make a really cool site !?!

This is my current site, okay, it is a bit CRAP I know !!!!!!!

http://www.theprohacker.tk

www.dot.tk is a redirecting site who does it for free (something like that).
The site is hosted on Tripod.com.

What I wanted to do was get really nice icons and fonts, and that side bar, but I don't know how to ! I could totally redesign my current site, if you think that way is better.

First off, lose the animated gif's, they are very distracting.

Secondly, pick colors that please the eye such as black, dark blue, light blue, dark green, grey/white, or something positive. Red, and colors like that also look nice if you know how to use them.

Now, get organized. I mean you have everything scatterd all over that page. Build tables to organize links and to store text in.

I was thinking of doing that!

Agree with above.

Also I'd lose the music!!

Personally I loathe and detest 'auto' music on a site. The first reason is that not everyone likes your taste in music (me I don't mind eminem) but if I'd wanted to look at your site but disliked eminem I'd just jump straight out again.

Second reason is I do most of my surfiing when the kids are in bed etc.. and it always scares the sh*t out of me when you link to a place that blasts the music out - you know speakers left on UT2003 settings!! :D

Music's OK if the browser can select it themselves.

Good luck with the development. Oh don't know if it's a good idea linking to a site that promotes hacking in such a 'flamboyant' way (from here that is).

Animated gifs can be nice, if they serve a purpose.

I just cant stand it when I go to a site, and there are objects moving around the screen while I try to read the text. It is distracting.

Build tables with text/links in them, and try to pick a text color and stick with it. Multi colored text is not very attractive.

Nope they're not. :)

- Lose the music.
- The logo is really cool, but really big. 350k is 300k too much IMO. But it's really nice.
- Get a plainer background. The text is unreadable as it is now.
- User text of one color, and smaller.
- Use tables to organize the text.
- Don't center all the text.
- That attitude is not very inviting.

Happy coding! :)

Does anybody know, you might have seen my post which said that I know now, but I deleted it because I don't fully understand!

Don't know about that but some of that coloured text is very hard to read.

So far, I put a black background, white text and a new logo at the top. This new logo which is an animated gif is only 109Kb now!

To make my site look organised, I need to make a sidebar, but don't know how to ?

A sidebar can easily be made using a table:
Code:
-------------------------------------
|      |                            |
| Menu |      Page stuff            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
|      |                            |
-------------------------------------
The code is:
Code:
<TABLE [preferred parameters]>
  <TR>
    <TD WIDTH="200">
      Menu
    </TD>
    <TD>
      Page stuff
    </TD>
  </TR>
</TABLE>

Thanks man, but what thing do I put into the 'preffered parameters' space ???

Code:
WIDTH="100%" BORDER="0" CELLPADDING="10" CELLSPACING="0"
...or whatever you want them to be.

and just to make sure, do I put this next to <body or underneath it ?

Oi man, i just bought this program, it is quite simple to make navbars and that lot. It is Xara Menu Maker!

It is excellent !

I think this program will be the best way to make a navigation bar!

Thanks anyway people!

Still I am open for more suggestions to make the site sound or look better ?

What can I do to make it say in a box or something, if a person wants the music on or not

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
