I'm trying to make sort of a virtual LAN for simplifying a lot of things for my friends and family out here. I want to be able to access files, play games, et cetera exactly as if we were all on a LAN. Is there a way to do this, or am I asking for the wrong things and you know a better way to do what I'm trying to do?

Sounds like you're looking for Hamachi. :)
It's a great app, by the way.

Been using it a few hours now. Works as advertised! Not only can I share files and folders, but setting up multiplayer games is easier than ever.

And I get to mess with my mom's head, making text files appear on her desktop with odd messages.

I'm also a big fan of their Log Me In
Good stuff for controlling a computer remotely.
