Well, I did it - my 9800Pro has decided to start playing up, and that took me over the brink. I'm still not sure whether I was right in spending so much or not, but this is what I ordered.
Intel Quad Core Q6600
BFG GeForce 8800GTS OC 640MB HDCP Enabled Dual DVI PCI Express (550MHz Core Clock) (1600MHz Memory Clock) (1300MHz Shader Clock)
Corsair XMS6400 2GB DDR2 (2x1GB) 800Mhz Non-ECC
Abit AW9D MAX i975X Socket 775 2x PCI-E 16x Dual Channel DDRII 7x SATA(II) Raid 7.1CH HD Audio Firewire ATX Motherboard
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case
Western Digital Caviar 160Gb 8Mb Cache Hard Disk Drive SATAII 300MB/s <8.9ms 7200rpm
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Logitech MX518 Gaming Grade Optical Mouse
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 CPU Cooler
SAMSUNG 20x DVD+/-R/RW/RAM SATA (Black)
ThermalTake Toughpower Series Cable Management 700W Active
1.44MB 3.5 Inch Floppy Disk Drive (Black)
Now, the only bottleneck I can see in that system is the harddrive - ideally I would have had a 10,000 rpm 4.5ms one, but they still cost waayy too much.
What do you reckon, is that a good config? I read reviews and benchmarks of each of the components (that I could find anyway) and all seem to come out very good.
