    Try this

    create a new notepad file and type the data below

    save the file as boot.ini on ur C: drive
    (remember the extension should be *.ini)

    [boot loader]
    timeout=0
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

    if he/she has one 2 OSs it should be like this

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    C:\="Microsoft Windows"

    if one the C:\="Microsoft Windows" must be erased

    :D Octopus, the [ in front of bootloader is missing :D apart from that very good point. May be exactly this is the cause of the problem.
    jasonb is using Pro (found out by clicking 'Find users posts' ) but just in case someone else has the problem, the term for home is "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"

    For some strange reason it is not possible to post such a file here without the lines getting broken, don't know if it really matters but to make sure

    Line1 : [boot loader]
    2: timeout=0
    3: default=multi(0)disk(.......
    4: [operating systems]
    5: multi(0)disk(.......

    Btw you can edit the boot.ini in msconfig (Start - run)
