Installing XP

Any information about this problem will be greatly appreciated...

I was trying to install XP-Professional on my Fathers PC and towards the end of the installation, I got this error and the setup failed:

"An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing."

"one of the components that setup needs to continue could not be installed."

"Manifest parse error: Invalid at the top level of the document"

- Then in the log file, was this information

Error SXS.DLL Syntax error in manifest or policy file
"G:\I386\asms\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS\CONTROLS.MAN" on line 0

I have now tried installing this 3 times, but to no avail, anybody have any ideas ?

well I tried a new clean install of XP, and couldn't get it to work (said something about no having the end user licence agreement), so all my failures have been trying to upgrade from 98 or ME, each time doing a clean install of 98 or ME then instantly trying to upgrade them to XP

That is the way I´ve allways done it. Clean install of 98 and then directly a new install of XP. I never had any problems with this.

I´ll get back if I come up with anything.

SWAGMAN,

Make sure all the files on the CD are ok. Try copying the i386 foder onto the hard drive and installing XP from there, by running winnt.exe.

If the problem still persists, you might need to get a new XP media.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
