img tags and long URIs

It would seem that this problem doesn't actually relate to the length of the URI, it would appear it's caused by asterisks in the file name or rather file path.

This image has a rather long file path, but works fine:

sillylongfilename-i-like-cake.jpg


taking the MSN uri from above and replacing the *'s with alphanumeric characters make's it parse correctly (giving a 404 for the image, of course). So it would appear that it's definitely the *'s and not the length.
