I'm curious ...

As long as it's reasonably good code, perfect compliance isn't really a necessity.

For example, I realized that I forgot to add an alt attribute for one of my images (which is one of the reasons why it didn't validate today, although it usually does). Not really a big deal. The site looks the same in every modern browser, and that's what's the goal of writing compliant code anyway. If someone's using Lynx to view my site and can't see the alt attribute for the image, I suggest that they leave the dark ages and start using normal browsers like normal people. :p

Edit: Attribute added, problem solved. Valid XHTML 1.0 ;)

Have some respect for your elders :p. UNIX command line is their life :p

I use Lynx for quite a few reasons:

1. I believe i am about to be redirected by some stupid link to goatse.cx and that is something i don't want to see
2. I need to download a file from a site quickly, but you need to fill in some form to get there.
3. Who does not like text based browsing?

1. I don't visit sites that could potentially redirect me to crap like that. :D
2. If your ultimate aim is just to get to the download, you wouldn't care about looking at alt attributes of my images anyway, would you? :D
3. *Raises hand* It's a novelty, but it's not really practical anymore :p

The problem is that if you do not follow standards, then your site may not be rendered correctly, if IE would actually not render things incorrectly that would probably stop the nasty html crap that is out there. By supporting unsupported tags, e.g. <marquee>, and by not being CSS2 compliant, they are actually breaking the web and hindering its progress forward.

My entire site, barring phpBB, is handwritten by me, is either XHTML 1.1 or HTML 4.01 compliant, it is all CSS compliant. I make a point of it. In all honesty, once you write compliant code enough, it doesn't ake any longer to write a site, you get used to it.

quite true, once you have written a site or two and then had to fix it all up you learn things, and then when you are writing your HTML you just code it properly anyway

1. It is mostly links from IRC. So it is not a site i visit and then click on a link to goatse
2. Uhm, if my aim is got a download, the alt tags are good to have. Some sites make their submit button an image, and if it has an alt it is a lot easier to find, or if a link to the download is an image with the text download on it, has an alt named download
3. It is practical for when you are on a low bandwidth link. Ive had times when i was on 56 K dialup, and i would just SSH to my shell server, and visit forums and other such things using Lynx. No images to download, no crap.

My first site was done using one of those online web editors. It was pretty much a 5 minute job.

Then I made a more complex site in Frontpage. Then in Dreamweaver. Then Notepad. However for about a year and a hafl I have been using Notepad 2.

Learning how to properly code is easy once you have made a site or two, like it has previously been stated.

off topic but foobar made a funny :lick:

That's pretty much exactly the same order I went in too...minus the online web editor.
Frontpage -> Dreamweaver -> Notepad -> Notepad2 :)

Edit: Haha, zeke_mo :p
