Instant message as in MSN Messenger or AIM, or as in the grey boxes with an OK button?

It's probably just spam anyway. Annoying but harmless. Can you post the message?

I've just started getting these annoying popups

really annoying when they appear half way through a game

do they look anything like this ??

BTW ......... I'm on AOL & I dont think they are responsible

Darn annoying type of advertising!

http://mynetwatchman.com/kb/security/articles/popupspam/index.htm is one of the best test and fix pages ive seen. OR http://www.stopmessengerspam.com/index.html

Easy fix thankfully, firewalling and/or disabling the messenger service fixes it up.

vadislav, on wednesday (when it comes out) install ad-aware 6 free if you suspect spyware this will catch it for you. Its the most likely cause if its not releated to the messenger service or a particular site.

thanks for link :D

I cant disable the messenger I'm on a network

Dont really want to put a firewall on it slows down online gaming

its more than likley caused by adaware bundled with software

no idea which one though  I've gone through loads of freebies and demos

maybe its time a format :p

TwoZ the messenger service is only used for sending administrative alerts, so unless you use net send alot go ahead and turn it off.

As rettahc said its not critical.

A firewall wont slow your gaming down that much if you use a light resource app such as OutpOst which can use as little as 900k of memory or kerio. I understand that even the XP firewall will stop the spam but cant confirm this.

Yeah I twigged after I posted (usually the case)

Doh !!!!!!!

usually I have workstation disabled in services so I've never seen it before this week

after a late night LAN session I forgot to turn it off again

sorted now

thanks

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
