Hmm, not sure whether to put this in the Apps section of the Hardware section since this is something I'm unsure of how to do in XP.

Anyways, one of the useful features of scandisk from 9x was that if you ran it it you could see how many bad sectors you have on your hardrive.

With XP, I am unsure of an accurate way to do this. Sure you can run chkdsk and it will report errors if it finds any, but what if you've ran it the past and want to see a full report of the status of your hardrive?
I've tried looking for the chckdsk logfile, but I'm not sure where it's located.

So, how can I find out?

Ever do a CHKDSK / R? That's the command to search for bad sectors and whatnot. I would consider doing a CHKDSK / R / V if you want to scan for bad sectors and get a verbose explanation. I've never done it, because I've heard it takes forever (and I have some pretty big hard drives).

(Note: my -V explanation works under NTFS, but reacts differently with FAT32; it just lists your entire file system under FAT32.)

The number of bad sectors should be 0, zero, ziltch, none, or you're going to have to replace the drive pretty soon.

i thought that bad sectors were a problem if you had loads or they were in the boot sector

and i think he means something to give a visual output of where the bad sectors are located much like the 9x scandisk

A few bad sectors are not a problem if they would have the habit of staying put and staying few. The problem is that bad sectors don't have manners. They usually jump around and multiply like rabbits. So if you find some, you can bet your behind there'll be more!

Sometimes a bad sector can occur because of a software problem and disappear after a repartition/reformat. But it's very unusual afaik, I've only encountered it once.

with xp, and the ntfs, your bad sectors will almost never be known by you.

xp remaps bad sectors on the fly...as you're working, if you are using the nt file system, chck disk is only necessary in a catastrophy.

    amazing kernal, this nt os

norton disc doctor only invokes the native chk disc utility, it's not a seperate scan disc from xp's internal device

So, how am I supposed to check the status of my harddrive then if it won't tell me the bad sectors? :)

I am aware of what bad sectors mean for a harddrive, but I just don't know of any way to find out how many there are.

Hmm.... I just ran chkdsk again while writing this message. Seems the errors are increasing.

A few days back I got the following errors:
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
Deleting index entry sp_result[1].htm in index $I30 of file 397.
Deleting index entry SP_RES~1.HTM in index $I30 of file 397.
    Index verification completed.

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

That's when I decided to post here. Later I ran a scan for bad sectors using: chkdsk /r
However, that scan found 0 errors of any kind.

Just a minute ago I ran "chkdsk /v" and got the following errors:

CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
    Index verification completed.
Detected minor inconsistencies on the drive. This is not a corruption.
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
Cleaning up 4 unused index entries from index $SII of file 9.
Cleaning up 4 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 9.
Cleaning up 4 unused security descriptors.
    Security descriptor verification completed.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
    master file table (MFT) bitmap.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

kevin...this is very interesting to me...please keep posting as you find more information

it looks like chkdisc thinks it's correcting some of the bad values on the disc...

Have you run chkdsk /f like it says? It doesn't have to be bad sectors you know.

do you shut down windows before power off i know a mate that just powers off then wonders why his pc is F**ked
and also you got any lame freewar apps that repair or defrag the disk as they might cause a problem
