one of your security programs might be blocking the site

spybot, adaware, spyware blaster...one of those

go into these and undo...see if that helps

also firewalls can act up as well
zone alarm especially
dont bother disabling it just uninstall it

there is another way to get on your fav site
do a google search for it
& click on cached
then try and refresh the page

check the host fle with notepad and see if it is aded there, if so delete it.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

TWOZIGZAG,,,,,,,,,,,,, I tried that and can access the main page then tried a refresh and page comes back, but clicking anything else gives me the 404 error.

we are getting there though a step nearer.

ps gonna have a few beers to celebrate, cheers gonzo

Try this:
In the Run box type: regsvr32 urlmon.dll
It should box up a box saying it was successful or not.
If that does not work, go to add\remove programs and choose Internet Explorer. When it starts, choose repair.

edit

oops too late

gonzo saves the day

:D

Atta Boy Gonzo:D - care to add a little explaination so the old man can learn something?

:D :D :D yes explain where you picked that 1 up, what a cracker would of never thought of anything like that:eek: :D :D :D :D :p

well kazaa lite uses the super trick to block ad's dont it, basically its a cashe of commanly used websites, ie u tell it to look at localhost ip instead of the real ip of an advert and it will return a 404 error in place of ads, saving bandwidth.
for those of us using routers, all you should find is the local host ip 127.0.0.1

so if a site is added as its used a lot, in the case of cupid stunt, and the site changes ip, then it all ends up in the 404 error. there is a dos command to check and clear the cashe, but im too drunk to find it so i went to the k-lite site and had a look :)

Thanks Gonzo - I think I followed that! The bottom line being that the site had to change it's IP for this situation to occur and since none of us othrs have been there before or at least on a regular basis - it didn't "404" us?

LOL here is the sober version from kazaa lite, it's what made me think about the problem

How exactly does the HOSTS file work?

The short answer is that the HOSTS file is like an address book. When you type an address like www.yahoo.com into your browser, the HOSTS file is consulted to see if you have the IP address, or "telephone number," for that site. If you do, then your computer will "call it" and the site will open. If not, your computer will ask your ISP's (internet service provider) computer for the phone number before it can "call" that site. Most of the time, you do not have addresses in your "address book," because you have not put any there. Therefore, most of the time your computer asks for the IP address from your ISP to find sites.

If you put ad server names into your HOSTS file with your own computer's IP address (Localhost: 127.0.0.1), your computer will never be able to contact the ad server. It will try to, but it will be simply calling itself and get sort of a "busy signal". Your computer will then give up calling the ad server and no ads will be loaded, nor will any tracking take place. Your choices for blocking sites are not just limited to blocking ad servers. You may block sites that serve advertisements, sites that serve objectionable content, or any other site that you choose to block. Also would it be possible to redirect a website to another website by using that website's IP adress in stead of your computers IP adress.

Where can I find that HOSTS file you are talking about?

This HOSTS file is located here:

Linux /etc
Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\
Windows NT/2000/XP c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\
(you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000)

NOTE: The HOSTS file does NOT have an extention (extensions are the .exe, .txt, .doc, etc. endings to filenames). HOSTS.sam is just an sample file, not the file you need to edit.

If you don't have a HOSTS file yet, then create an empty textfile and rename it to remove the .txt extension.

How can I edit the HOSTS file?

You can open the HOSTS file by right-clicking on it and selecting "open with". Then select Notepad.

After that you can edit it similar as you would with a normal text file.

How can I manually remove the supertrick?

Locate your hosts file and open it with Notepad. See the topics above on how to do that.

Now remove everything, except for the first two lines:

# localhost: Needs to stay like this to work
127.0.0.1 localhost

Save the file.

How to block a website/server:

Just add one or more lines to the hosts file like this:

127.0.0.1 desktop.kazaa.com

Just 127.0.0.1 followed by a space followed by the server you want to block

and this is a part list of blocked ad's to give the full picture.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
