The demo will at least show if you can recover your files.
There may be good free utilities available but I can't think of any atm.
BTW. ALWAYS backup important files to CD, DVD or another HD as this will always happen when you don't want it to

With that said, there are several data recovery tools that you can try. I'd personally recommend trying GetDataBack (for NTFS). We used it to recover some files on one of the machines at my dad's workplace and it worked wonders. Your mileage may vary though.
