harddrive went?

I got a 40 gig maxtor harddrive for xmas and recently it has been giving me problems. About a week ago, the partition table went, and I managed to reformat it only with Maxtor's maxblast. Then yesterday it did it again, and i cant reformat it, and i ran their diagnostic tools, and it gave me error messages. Its not making any funny noises or anything. Any ideas?

What error message did you get when you ran the diagnostics?

It gave me error code D2HS57 which i looked up on Maxtor's site, but that didnt help. The drive gets regconized in windows xp, as the correct size, i just can't reformat it.

Are you using the xp cd to do the format or some other way?
