hard drive gaps

when I defragment my hard drive their appears to be a large gap between files that does not move after defrag has finished, is this a bad or damaged sector, if not explanations would be appreciated

Some files, like paging files and some system files, will not be moved during a normal defrag. These files can only be moved during a boot up defrag, that's probably why you see the gaps.

Hope this helps:)

XP will not allow files that are "open" or in use to be moved or defragged.

Chilly - No worries. I get the same thing on my 4 computers. It is as Allan said, files that are in use cannot be moved in XP. Iceman is correct too. Your hard drive is fine - those gaps do not mean that you have damaged sectors.

I've heard Iceman38 mention that you can remove these gaps by doing a boot-up defrag. How can I do this? If anyone has the asnswer please respond by emailing me (my addy is under my nickname on the left). My ICQ number is 162003296.

That was fast. I hit the refresh button 5 minutes after I had written the message and voila! A reply! Thanks, BOBbagels.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
