The past few weeks I had noticed a slow down in XP, nothing I could put my finger on, just one of those feeling we have towards our OS.
Graphics seemed a little slugish a bit slower loading etc.
I had not loaded any software or drivers for more than a month so was flying FS2002 when suddenly a lock up egad never have any probs.
After rebooting decided to check the registry manually to see if I could see something that should not be there, what I found was my G3 card was represented as 5 devices with corresponding setting etc.
After unloading the graphics drivers, sweeping the registry of all references to the card and then reloading new drivers everything is back to it's normal speedy self.
The point of this is that I can't recall the last time I loaded new nvidia drivers, presently run 23.12 so I can't explain why I wound up with so many configurations in the registry, I do know cleaning it out solved my problems.
So be vigilant even with XP it can lull you into a false sense of well being.
