explorer taking up too much resources in xp

make sure your hd is not sharing with the cd drive
this will cause your computer to crawl

egghead

do you mean not sharing an ide channel? If that is what you mean then no, the two cd drives are on their own seperate ide channel.

hmm... did u do anything these few days?? i mean mayb u install any driver or etc etc.... if u really dont hav any idea.... u can try the system restore. worth a try....!

I haven't really done anything new, thats why its so confusing for me. I think I'm either going to have to do system restore or do a repair install of windows.

i think u better try the system restore.... b4 doing repair install....:)

ok...I didn't read every post, so I might be repeating some advice.

your scanner might not find this one, so use another.

go to trend free on line virus scan.

also, adaware has not been updated in a while.

I don't have the link, do a google for spybot.

ot's up to date...see if that helps

I did the online virus scan that someone mentioned and it found 7 infected files. It deleted the files and I'll let you know if that fixes the problem

I've rebooted and everything now and everything is working great again. Thanks for everyone that gave suggestions and everything.

wow the online virus scan worked were outher hadn't:eek:

what virus program were you using by intrest?

and what was the name of the virus that was infecting you?

hrmm, before my reformat and upgrade, my explorer was constantly crashing out when trying to copy files using the copy to and also having issues with excessive memory usage.
This was also after about a year without formatting.

which virus was infecting you?

that's all? mine takes up 49MB.

I didn't catch the name of the virus, it was infecting the system restore information on 2 different drives from what I can tel. D:/system volume information/restore..... and the same thing on drive E:

I use Norton Antivirus 2002 and it missed the 7 files on both scans I did. Methinks I'll be looking for new software now.

dam i got nav 2002 as well

how long did the scan take cus nav takes like 40 mins normally:eek:

When I scanned with nav it took at least a half hour each time, the online one I'm not sure about because I started it then left the apartment for a while. It was finished when I got back.

NAV does not scan the restore points - it is listed (default) as an Exclusion in the NAV Options - that is why NAV missed it!

There is an article I remember reading - but can't put my finger on it at the moment about deleting restore points and then restarting system restore in order to insure the restore points are virus free.

it's normal..I asked them once and they said it depends on how many files there.

if it's there like you said then you MUST disbale system restore.by disbaling it,all files there will be deleted therefore the virus will be deleted, too. right click on my Com>>>Prop.>>>System restore.

last time it was over 80,000 files:p took bout 45 mins

mine normally takes about 1h 30m, there are times that it has taken 2 hours.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
