Ok, after spending the last week at it I finally got the problem sorted! And it wasn't the old adaptec drivers, it wasn't the ASPI layer, it wasn't even the bloody burner. It was the shagging cd's!
I hadn't used my own cd the back up files in a while so I didn't notice that when I put in the audio cds to try and burn them, that the burner didn't make the whirring noise that it usually makes when you load a cd. I assumed that because none of the 3 cds I'd been give to burn didn't work that there was a problem with the burner and that my own cd wouldn't work either. WRONG!
Yesterday just for s***s & giggles I decided to try my own cd, and hey presto, whirring noise. I suddenly realised that it didn't make that noise when I loaded up the other cds so I erased all the files on my cd and attempted to burn the music to it. It worked immediately. My cd is a CDRW cd, so I had a closer look at the cds give to me and realised that in fact they are only CDR!
So thanks a bunch for all your help, sorry it was a waste of your time, because my gobshite boyfriend can't read a label correctly and bought the wrong cds. Don't worry, I gave him a piece of my mind. (for me, and for all of you too) Thanks again, you've all been great.
