I am planning on buying a DVD writer but i am unsure what is the best format to buy. What is the difference between,
    DVD-R and DVD-RW
    OR
    DVD+R and DVD+RW
    And also DVD RAM
What is the best format for using in Stand alone dvd player.

There are DVD+-R/RW combo drives so you can run both. DVD-RAM is right out. DVD-R is said to be the most compatible followed by DVD+RW.

You may wish to visit http://www.dvdwriters.co.uk/ and http://www.dvdplusrw.org/ .

Also, the DVD writer to buy at the moment is Sony's DRU500A which is sold out everywhere right now...personally I'm waiting for prices to drop after the new year.

You can read a review of this unit here.

I'm just learning about this topic myself and would appreciate more useful links. Also, has anyone found a cheap and reliable source of DVD media?
