DVD-RAM Software??

I would if you could help? I'm trying to get my head around DVD-RAM. I want to record a DVD-RAM disc (double-layer, double-sided 19GB disc), in theory, I am right in saying that you need a specific type of DVD-RAM recorder and DVD-RAM specific software?

Im I also right in thinking that only a DVD-RAM drive would be able to read the DVD afterwards?

Sounds crazy, but I only realised recently that there was more than one type of DVD!! D'oh!
