DVD burner format confusion...:(

I am starting to look at getting a dvd writer here before too long and all the different formats have given me a headache...does anyone know what format will need to be supported for making backups of dvds you own and then be able to play the backup copy on your home dvd player?

Look at getting a dual format burner, they burn DVD-R and DVD+R. I personally like the SONY unit DW-U10A.

There are lots of drive out that support both formats + and -, why not just buy one of the dual format drives and then you do not have to worry about it.
