Domains and Web hosting

Heya, i had no idea where this would go, so i thought i'd throw it in here to stop any arguments.

i'm looking to buy my name a site for his bday, (for his company)

Basically, I know nothing when it comes to buying/uploading all this stuff i've made for him. Can anyone explain it to me in laymen's terms?

I've found the domain name. That's one thing, but how does the rest work?
