When I try to run Disk Cleanup by clicking on "Disk Cleanup" on the General Tab in the Local Disk C: properties box, the Disk Cleanup utility starts but then freezes within about ten seconds. If I then press cancel, everything on the computer runs veeeeeeery slow. As a matter of fact, if I press Ctl-Alt-Del, and then click on the "Performance" tab, it shows 100% usage by the CPU. The only way to get the usage back down to normal is to click on the "Proceses" Tab, highlight "cleanmgr.exe", and then press "End Process".

Does anyone have any ideas as to why the Disk Cleanup is not working (it used to work just fine!)? Also, how come when I cancel it after it freezes, it continues to use up 100% of the CPU usage!?

    Many thanks.....

Try manually emptying the folders. Do all the temp folders. Temporary Internet Files. History. Cookies. Recycle Bin. Any other you can think of then reboot & try disk cleaner again. Might work.

Do you have it set to compress files? If so, try unchecking that and see if it helps.
