I take an advanced computer course at college, have loads of
computer gear at home, but nobody had EVER called me a nerd
or geek...

good lord. just cuz you can't get into something doesn't mean everyone who does is flawed.

i love CS. it's a near perfectly-made game, but i certainly don't play i every day. so what if the graphics are from a year or 2 back... but the gameplay is top-notch. besides, it's great when you can use an old extra celeron 500mhz with a riva tnt and let your friend use it to play cs (smoothly) when everyone is over lanning. the game is about tactics and teamwork.

besides, i wouldn't call someone who plays a certain game everyday incessantly a nerd or geek. or else that would go for everyone who plays on their ps2/xbox/etc all the time. i think the term "nerd" is reserved for those who know a LOT of stuff about computer hardware/software that most others don't and wouldn't ever care about. i think i fit into that category.

and someone correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the term "geek" originate from centuries ago in the circus? geeks would bite the heads off of chickes for entertainment between acts. at least this is what i've heard a couple of times.

I think that "pwn" came from a typo, the same as the word "teh" is now a recognised word. Most words like this tend to come from spelling mistakes that are quite common and either someone somewhere thinks it sounds good, or they just get replicated so often that it just becomes accepted.

Going back.. Im with Lockstock, I cant stand CS! I think its outdated, stupid gameplay and I hate the idea of not constantly playing!
But that aside, Im 16 and run my own server with website, build computers for a living, have 4 in my household networked and all built by me, and damn proud to be the geek I am! I just look at those who thing theyre harder than the rest because they know nothing about computers with inferiority. Im going to be earning a lot more than them in the future when Ive got a proper job and theyre stacking shelves or working in McDonalds. Be proud of your superior knowledge, and use it against them.
