    Hi guys ..

I am thinking of buying a monitor and have the choice between a 17" CRT monitor and a 17" TFT LCD monitor. Which would you guys recommend?

My use of computer is mainly on word processing, internet and light games. I am just afraid the LCD monitor is not so good for games .. would it be true?

Please share ur advise and experience .. thanks!

if you get an lcd... make sure your video card has a dvi output...

make sure you also have good contrast and good refresh rates as well..

on the whole lcd's are probably the better option BUT remember that you are likely to get lower resolution on the LCD than the monitor..

if you have a good enough video card you can turn up the AA and AF to eliminate jaggies and bring distant objects into better focus overall :)

if money is no object... go LCD :)

any decent dx8 and above video card with good dvi will work..

personal recommendations probably start with the gf4 ti series which are still pretty decent... bear in mind that you should try and get a GOOD quality gf4 ti for starters...

then jump to the radeon 9600XT or the 5700ultra... I recommend the former personally but either is a decent buy for mainstream performance @ dx9 level...

I'll be buying an LCD soon, so I have done quite a bit of research. It turns out that if you are a serious gamer, then you don't want an LCD. This is because the response rate is slower than on CRTs, which can have a heavy effect on games. You said that you're a light gamer though, so I don't think an LCD would bother you much in that area. As far as DVI vs. Analog, DVI is better but often more expensive. From what I've gathered, the differences can be so subtle that it doesn't matter that much.

The two things I would be concerned with are:
    1) Contrast Ratio -- 450:1 or 500:1 recommended (DPI around 25mm)
    2) Response Time -- 20ms or less recommended

but what if the LCD does not have DVI connector and is still using the old VGA port?

you may not have the same crispness as you would with dvi... you will notice this in games and when you look @ text..

There is nothing wrong with using the VGA (analog) connection. If that's what you have, then use it. Like Sazar said, you might notice an increase in crispness by using DVI. The reason why analog is not quite as good is because the signal has to be converted from analog to digital during the transfer. DVI keeps the signal digital and so nothing is lost in the conversion.

The one application that still demands sticking with a CRT is doing graphics work. The LCD color space (realistic color range possible) is horribly inferior to a CRT.

Test drive any LCD you plan to buy on the games you plan to play. Whether it is acceptable is going to be a matter of personal preference. I've heard different reviewers praise and bad mouth the same brand and model LCD display.

One test is worth a thousand expert opinions. Sadly, even mine :(

Price for LCD has to drop significantly to match the price-benefit ratio of CRTs. A 15" LCD costs the same as a reasonable 19" CRT which means more desktop working area and far higher resolutions.
