Best way to apply thermal paste?

Thats one way not to do it. You probably won't get coverage out to the edge of the die. And if you miss say 10% of the die you loose about 10% of your cooling. Also the extra paste in the center actually raises the thermal resistance between the die and the HSF.

Heat removal is proportional to the contact area between the sink and the die. Thats why AMD was in such trouble last spring. They dropped the die surface area on the tbred more than they reduced the heat generated. Suddenly you had to have special HSF for the Tbred's.

then it starts to boil

you could always just have no HSF, cover it in oil and do a fry-up, those fried eggs might take a while, but they'll kepp that temp down

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
