Best Router

The CD has some worthless "wizard" that I would suggest never using, just the like the connection wizard in Windows. :) Just plug it in and set it up just like you did your old one.

dd-wrt is firmware like Tomato. Try the router out by itself, if it works and you are hapy enough with it you can leavi it alone. If you find the connections limiting than you can llokat dd-wrt or tomato and upgrade the router.

Where do I find DD-WRT firmware, and how do I upgrade?

You can find DD-WRT downloads for routers here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/down.php?path=downloads%2Fv24-sp1%2FConsumer/

Select Consumer, and then the maker and model of your router. To upgrade, pull up the GUI for your router (usually by pointing your browser to 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1). With linksys I believe you can navigate to the Administration Tab, and then point it to the file you downloaded for a firmware upgrade.

I'm running a Linksys WRT600N with DD-WRT, it's rock solid. The router also has 32MB of RAM which is nice for stability.

Just remember if you flash it wrong or power goes out during the flash you will brick your router.
Last time I flashed it there was like three steps to the upgrade.

Maybe take a look at the instructions first.

When I do this, will Internet go down, any issues with my network, will computers need to be setup again on the network, or what?

There are many items, what do I download?

Most of the tutorials ask that you start with the mini builds when upgrading form a linksys firmware. Grab the dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin. Once upgraded, you can reinstall the standard generic version if you feel it's needed.

For most routers, you will save the file to your desktop. Then point your current router/gui to the file on your system and begin the upgrade process. The install tutorial will have you reset your router to the defaults before flashing.

During the flash process you will lose network connectivity. After it is flashed, you will have to log into the router and setup any previous settings you had (Port Forwards, Router Name, Wireless, Encryption, Etc). The default login after flashing for DD-WRT is root/admin.

Here is a tutorial on how to flash which works for all the 54G models
