Adding whitespace to the avatar isn't a fix. It's a hack to work around the actual problem.
But hey, it's the best you can do unless someone with access wants to go in and look at the code.

Since its more of a preference, if you are designing your own avatar keep it in mind and add a transparent strip as Vertigo said. Or use the color that I provided if you don't want to bother with or don't know how to use transparency. The fact that the spacing does not show up in Firefox or Opera makes me think its IE 6/7 that is wrong. Either way, adjust your avatar to the way you like it in the browser you use and don't worry about it.

We need EP to hop into the style sheets to fix this, unless it's recognised as an actual problem by JelSoft and may be fixed in future version of the board.

Personally I'd like the default(?) layout with avatars at the top of posts as an option, that'd solve the problem, but that's a different matter all together

Agreed, but could we not squish them down to a restricted height when using that layout?
