Right now I'm using Audacity, but if you want to recommend something free and better, that's fine.
I used it to chop out a piece of an MP3 and put it on my phone. On my phone, the MP3 isn't quite loud enough. On Audacity, how do I increase the volume? Would I use the "Amplify" effect? Is there any way to avoid the clipping?
    Thanks

yeah.. use amplify and make sure the "don't allow clipping" button is checked... audacity is awesome.. i use it on mac and pc :D

but i might add... if the quality is bad after amplifying, do a noise cancelation on it and it will be much better... usually the optimal settings are default so if you don't have a specific preference, don't change the values that are prefilled...

If I check "don't allow clipping" then it won't amplify.

Audacity is probably best free program right now, look into audition when you have the money, people are familiar with Pro Tools, but I believe Adobe Audition will quickly be up there.

    lol...

hey, when you say that it won't amplify then the setting automatically shows 0? even 2 or 3 on the bar will amplify quite a bit...

how's your waves look? are some of them maxed out top/bottom? if there are only a few that reach all the way, you can try to select everything up to that point bothways (up to and afterwards to the end) and amplify those selections leaving the odball out....

if you still can't figure it out then upload what you have selected for your ringtone and i'll do it...

I decided to just allow some clipping. It sounds pretty much the same anyway.

Have you ever tried Adobe Audition? well then, they make computer software, just because they basically started with graphic design programs doesn't mean they can't start making other new products, they did make Premiere...
