let's say i have an unlocked athlon 800. then it goes into an HP mobo... one where you don't get to pick the fsb or multiplier settings. will it detect it as an 800mhz cpu by default or, because it's unlocked, automatically choose the lowest multiplier or something?

    thanks

Depends on your motherboard. Even if the chip is unlocked, you still need the settings in the BIOS to change them. 95% of big brand PCs do NOT have those features, even with an unlocked processor.

yeah, i understand that. but my processor in this mobo is unlocked. i will probably be getting a 1.4ghz proc soon and want to lend this one to a friend with an hp. his bios doesn't give any options concerning cpu speed. will it run at 800mhz, at least? or, rather, some low default setting because it is unlocked?

Even if unlocked, it should still autodetect as 800MHz if the PC doesnt support settings. You just cant OC it
