2 Questions.....

1. If I bought a second hand PC with XP installled on it (hypothetically) is there a program or way I can tell whether it is an oem, corp or retail version? I have the product key and it is not the one everyone else goes on about and my windows update works fine however the leaked SP1's don't install.

2. Asked it before but someone posted a link to a guys site about 2 months ago that explained what each of XP's services do and which you really need. I can't need all these services running...

Want to see if it would make a difference if I had 2 logons, 1 for normal use and one with the bare essentials for games. Mmm....

Thanks....

just check the pid it will be something like 55274-640-xxxxxxxx-xxxxx if its the corp key

services for XP
That should help you out with ur second question. What was the error message that u get when u try to install a leaked SP1? I've also attached a little file that will show u what ur key is on the system. Reason for that is I guessing that u might have the blacklisted key on the system and that would be way u can't install any of SP1's that haved leaked.

Hope that helps you

Must be blacklisted....

It unpacks and then says 'Service Pack 1 Setup Error' - 'Service Pack 1 canceled' just after the I agree bit. Oh well....

Thanks anyway!

Oh and ta for the link that was the page I was after.....;)

Yep u have the blacklist key. I know there is a way around ur problem but I don't think u have another corp cd key floating around. Sorry but at least u know for sure that is the problem.

What if.....

I get a legit Retail version and upgrade it over the Corp version (therefore retaining everything installed) would that then change the PID to the retail one?

Obviously it would need to be activated and all that as well....

Don't know. Haven't tried and have no reason to try that myself.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
