Virgin Media has said it is does not know how many of its 3.6 million broadband customers were hit overall. A spokesman said Virgin was working to reconnect the remaining "few thousand". The problem was caused when the routine maintenance caused Virgin's set-top boxes and modems to lose their "leased" IP address, the unique number that identifies them on the internet. Source http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7149931.stm i was one of them - luckly i was only offline for 15 mins ![]() |

Up here in Central belt Scotland, I had just typed in a long online job application and had just pressed the submit button when it hit me. Sods law right enough!
I was off-line for 10 mins or less. I could see my Cable modem log and it indicated loss of DNS and the IP. So there was little I could do. I sat there and tried to manually renew the DHCP once a min. I guess I had beat the rush! When I came back online I was thankfully able to recover my form and finally submit it. Worrying moment though. :-) I bet some techy was on a PC and said to themselves - "I wonder what happens when I click on 'Renew ALL' on this DHCP server"? |

It's not as bad as a Level 3 maintence job a while back.
Some poor guy botched something on a router in chicago that took all of level3 offline, most of tiscali, most of verizon, etc. Caused headaches for a lot of people. I'd have hated to be that guy
