News ISP's To Start Tracking Torrent Downloads

Starting 7/1/2012 major US Internet service providers will start tracking and monitoring their user's torrent downloads.

Whether or not this will end or severely impact torrent downloads remains to be seen.

Re: ISP's Will Start Tracking Torrent Downloads

I already think that comcast throttles torrent downloads, no matter what port you use.

When I download torrents with comcast, it bounces from 3 meg to 1 meg, then to 0 meg and stalls for a couple of minutes before going back up to 3 meg and starting the cycle all over again.

Must be something in your area or torrent client.

All of my torrents stay steady with no fall back.

I am on Blast tier.

I agree that Comcast doesn't throttle torrents. I can maintain 2-3 MB/s down. It's the ONLY thing about them that doesn't suck.

I've had ISPs that trottle torrents heavily (40mbps service put down to 150KB/s transfer) but I haven't had the problem on Comcast. I will say however I don't ever download torrents on comcast because the 3 or 4 times I did (all times it was a tv show) I got an email regarding illegal downloads. Since that I've kept up my seedbox and use that for all my torrenting needs. I can download from the seedbox at a nice 8+ MB/s after Comcast's nice DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade (150mbps service) and I haven't heard a peep about it.

The only problem with Comcast now is there data-cap, I know they say it's suspended ATM but they say if I exceed it they will still take a look into why I'm using so much data and advise me on how to cut back... I really hate having to pick and choose which downloads to make this month and which ones to push off for next month...

I downloaded a tv show the other day with bittorent and got a copyright infringement notice from comcast the next day. They are watching, so be careful. The notice they sent me was just a thing saying to stop downloading. But it scared me none the less. I have since took bittorent out of my computer.

Johnny, if you're still getting speed rate jumps and halts it may be your modem. I had a similar problem for about a year before I got a service rep who told me to get a new modem. I finally did and the issue disappeared.

Funny thing is the issue didn't show up on speed checks or regular downloads, it only happened on torrents. There may be a heavier load on the electronics causing heating of the modem and data loss. All I know is the tech rep was right (for once).

Another time some workers damaged my buried cable. That actually showed up on the phone more than the data line (DSL).

Yeah, that is how is was with me. Only happening on torrents and nothing else.

Yep, I downloaded "The Office" without using my seedbox and got an email the next day. Since I've used the seedbox I haven't heard anything so I assume its all good. I also download from only private trackers.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
