    CAL's needed

We are going to upgrade seven of our Win2000 servers to 2003, and I was working with CDW for an upgrade cost. They want to know the number of CAL's needed, and there is some question in my mind about this. By their definition, a CAL equals a person pulling information from a server. If this...

    Reasonably Priced Firewall Recommendation

For what its worth, we are using the SonicWall Pro3060, enhanced OS, for our routing, VPN, and firewalling needs, and it works great. I was skeptical at first because of the low cost, but I would have to say that I have been pleasantly suprised. We have specific ports blocked and open, but...

    which switch

o.K., can you clarify your preference. Why would cisco be the choice for layer 2? Seems to me that with cisco's reputation for solid, but expensive equipment, that the more complex config. associated with the layer 3 device would point to them, vs one of the other vendors.

    which switch

We are getting ready to upgrade our LAN, and I have been trying to find some reviews of 24 port gigabit layer 3 switches. It looks like the main players in the game are Cisco, Dell, 3com, and Netgear. Any body have any recommendations related to this? I am trying to balance cost with...

    New workstations

Hey all you techies, I posted a thread several months ago, complaining about the faulty capacitor issue we are having with our Dell Optiplex GX270's, and happily discovered that we are not alone. We are looking to purchase about 30 new workstations Q4 of this year, and I have to say my...

    Dell Optiplex GX270 defects

We are just replacing the boards as they fail. The question I was posting was, could the root of the problem be defective fans that are not providing adequate cooling, which is blowing the caps. On at least two occasions, we have noted the excess vibration with these due to a fan running at...

    Dell Optiplex GX270 defects

We purchased 17 Dell Optiplex GX270 workstations several years ago as part of a system installation, and immediately, we started to see issues with the units locking up; screen goes black, no response. Dell service had us pop the hood, and look at the capacitors. On all these that...

    Winmgmt

I already checked to see if it was set for verbose reporting, but it wasn't. I'll try disabling indexing, thanks

    Winmgmt

We are having some latency issues with a Win2000 server, and looking at Task Manager, I see winmgmt.exe coming up periodically, and grabbing CPU useage. It is set to log errors only, but seems to be come up alot. Is there any issue with disabling winmgmt that anyone knows of?

    Killing established connections

I have been trying to troubleshoot an annoying TCP socket connection issue between our Win2003 server and a UNIX box. The UNIX box keeps sending back RST_ACK requests, so our Win2003 server keeps sending SYN requests. As a result, there are typically six established connections between these...
