it could be that you have a virus, these sometimes stop windows update loading up and disable any antivirus updates aswel, if you could post some more info on the specifics of the problem i'd be better able to help...

It could be virus, but it also could be that microsoft keeps changing there win update software and yours is too far out of date. You might try this link directly http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us

if that doesn't work you can go here and manually download the updates you need, just make sure to read the descriptions carefullyhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166/

or you can check this article to reinstall windows update http://www.microsoft.com/communities...g=en&cr=US&p=1
and this article to update the WUA http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387285.aspx

i checked & it's stated that the last update was done it 2005. it's seldom conneccted to the internet. anyhow, i cant download software as well. i had to download my ad-aware on another computer. after installing it,i cant perform any updates for it. it seems to restrict certain applications. i also have problems with the windows media player. i cant roll back to the previous version. now it's not functioning.

ok, you might try this goto "run" and type "sfc /scannow". This will run the XP self repair of critical system files.
