Sad part is allot of that is probably to buy up patents that go with the mobile division. Gives Google the ability to protect Android just a touch more.

That is possible. It is also a lot to pay.

According to techcrunch and friends it was positioned as a defensive purchase in the preceding conference call about it.

Probably wanted Microsoft to NOT have it more then they wanted it though. Microsoft is already trying to charge for Android licencing, a Motorola Mobility purchase would just give them more power to fleece businesses for money.

Meh, Motorola sucks. I like HTC and I am terribly bored with android already. I'm terribly bored with all phones right now, I'm considering going to a windows phone or even a symbian phone just to change things up (I've had both of those before).
I say let google waste its money where it wants, screw up the stock market by paying a ridiculous premium on a stock thats not worth it...
