COD/Game Graphic Differences

So I have been playing Call Of Duty World At War on my PC.

I am running it at 1680x1050 at all possible Full settings on a 22" LCD Samsung 215tw monitor.

Now I also seen my friend playing Call of Duty World At War on I believe a 40" LCD HDTV through a PS3.

Now I didn't see them side by side but I am pretty sure the PS3 made this game look 10x better then what I am playing at.

Is the PS3 graphics better then the PC Version, is the PS3 a better computer (even though I am running at full settings) is having a HDTV making it look that much better?

Whats the deal?

HDTV makes it look better is all. A 22" monitor is tiny and won't fit as much into the picture as a 1920x1080 hdtv :)

If you had a 24"+ monitor doing 1920x1200 or higher you would get a better image there.

The PS3 cannot technically be better as the graphics settings are turned down to allow play on its limited hardware.

That is what I thought. I was just blown away at the difference, I didn't think a HD resolution and size would make that difference.

prolly is the screen size, resolution cant make that big of a difference

and cod isnt really that intensive graphics wise, so dont worry =]

What video card do you have?

With a good graphics card and a higher-resolution display, your game will look better on the PC. The HDTV is rendering at a higher-resolution as others are saying so the textures will look better but... you should be able to get higher filtering on your PC game.

I have the 8800GT 512MB currently, yea after christmas either from a present or me buying I should have a 27" or larger monitor, so it should be sweet.

well.. we're not talkin about going from 480i to 720p here... a 22" monitor should have a res decent enough not to make that difference so evindent

btw, saz.. screen resolution shouldnt have any effect on textures..

the difference between 1680x1050 to 1920x1080(hdtv) or 1200(24" monitor) is significant :)

Of course a huge TV helps too - your brain is used to seeing the world fill your field of vision, so a big tv picture will look better than a tiny 22" monitor due to the way the brain works.

Was really talking about the graphics quality and such. Not so much the individual textures.

i think everyone underestimates the PS3's power and efficiency and the fact that the game developer can optimize the PS3 version for it's exact specific hardware spec. where the PC version has to run on anything from a low-end ATI card to a high-end nvidia card and everything in between, along with different memory and processor configurations, not to mention operating system and drivers. it's more of a universal version of the game without any custom-tailored features.

i think, overall, ps3 games will look better than their PC counterparts for a couple years to come. it was the same with ps1, ps2, and other high-end consoles for that matter.

the PS3 cannot be superior to PC's for 2 reasons:

1 its the same graphics tech inside.
2 its a power pc processor with a bunch of math processors attached- intels core, core 2 and core i7 out perform it in every way until you put in to play those fancy number crunnching parallel processing things inn the cell processor, why do you think Apple switched macs from power pc to core?.

Anyone with a current ati or nvidia graphics card and in intel core, core2 or core i7 processor will look as good as or better than a PS3.

People underestimate PC's more than consoles.

Doesn't the PS3 only render at 720p, so given a >720p monitor your PC should look better. Also the PS3 has the advantage that it shouldn't be running as much other stuff so more of the hardware is dedicated to the game, though given a high enough spec'd PC the extra gubbins in the background shouldn't make a difference.

@LordOfLA: think Apple switched to Intel because the Performance per Watt was better with Intel rather than PowerPC. Throw enough power into a PowerPC and is probably just as good.

it would be daft it it didnt do 1080i/p as well - my xbox runs stuff at 1080i (my TV doesn't do 1080p). THough I can't use hdmi, xbox tries doing 1080p if I use that...

I agree, but I think thats because most people are not Gamers and are not using high-end PC's...

I have used the fastest most high-end components I could each and every time I rebuilt or updated my PC's ans have ALWAYS OC'd them to get as much Juice out of them as possible...

Just my $.02...

but you're not factoring in the identical hardware across every PS3 and the huge benefits that gives the ps3 versions of a game. less hardware is needed because the code is so specialized. and the PS3 doesn't drop frames or stutter ever and i'm sure levels load faster than their PC counterparts, despite using the optical drive as it's primary media and the 2.5" form factor HD.

example: i have not seen a PC racing game that comes close to the physical accuracy and graphical polish and fluidity of GT5: Prologue at 1080P. even Grid looks and feels better on the PS3.

so? a pc game doesnt have to be manually programmed for every hardware config.. thats what APIs are for

sure... a tailor made game for ps3 (like gt5) may look pretty awesome.. but multi console games look better on pc right now
not incredibly better.. but a little sharper texture, or better lighting.. or sometimes a just more steady framerate

Each product revision changes the hardware on consoles - you just have to look at the evolution of the 360 and the PS2 to see that - so console games have to cope with varying hardware too

What you are also missing is that most issues with PC games stem from faulty hardware, malware cluttering the PC or a moron at the controls.

You also miss that console games are downsized to fit there have been numerous examples of game areas being shrunk to fit the limited resources of the console of choice.

Stuttering on PC's is mostly caused by background disc access - largely disk defragmentation tools and anti-virus/anti-spyware firing off a scheduled scan with no concern for what else might be going on at the same time.

I recently read that symantec have a tool out now that actively checks for games and postpones scheduled scans if they are running.

example: i have not seen a PC racing game that comes close to the physical accuracy and graphical polish and fluidity of GT5: Prologue at 1080P. even Grid looks and feels better on the PS3.

PC Developers seem to be stuck in a cycle of yet-another-fps/rts/mmo cycle, forgetting that there are people around that happen to like normal strategy games, fighting games, racing sims, space sims, single player RPGs, adventures, turn-based things like master of orion, etc.

LA: i don't think it's the fact that PC Dev's are stuck in a rut of FPS/RTS/MMO's..... i think it's just that a lot of people agree that racing games just don't really suit the PC well, since racing games are usually more of a "play with a friend" type of game. Same with fighting games. Just not typically seen as the ideal PC platform game.

i DO however have to say that making such a statement that no PC racing game comes close to the accuracy and polish of GT5 is quite idiotic. For one.... you're talking about a game that's been in the making for HOW LONG?!?! It's pretty sad that they have to release a chunk of the game quite a while before the ACTUAL game..... quite possibly because people would probably get bored of waiting, and possibly consider the idea to be vaporware or something, kinda like Duke Nukem Forever has been seen for the past year or a few. Plus.... as i said... racing sims are more suited to consoles than PC's.

Uuh.... i might be mistaken.... but haven't a couple games on the PS3 been PLAGUED with noticable slowdowns on a fair number of games? if i remember correctly, even Resistance was practically chewed apart for having slowdowns... and that game is 80% tan (meaning color depth wise).

And as for the PS3 having superior graphics to the PC for a few years.... yeah.... total BS. It might have relatively similar graphics for a few years.... or better graphics on it's own PS3-exclusive games (which it's lacking in).... but i don't think it'll ever produce consistently better graphic quality games than PC, mostly due to the fact that the PS3, from the start, was a royal pain for developers to work with.... to unlock the full potential of. AFAIK, they still haven't done so, and probably won't do so for a while.... and while they're doing that, PC hardware will be progressing at an alarming rate.

Wow you guys really got into this topic. I will have to come back to this once in awhile and re-read it :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
