    Boot from CD failed

Heh, sorry about your friend there. This is all my own doing. I should have taken it as a sign when the computer didn't want to boot from the CD-ROM not to do anything. Up until this point this computer has given me hardly any trouble. It came with 98, was upgraded to Me, and then XP...

    Boot from CD failed

Well, I called up Microsoft and they asked me if I was trying to reinstall it on the computer the CD came with. I told them "yes," that the reinstallation CD (that I got with my laptop) came with the computer I was reinstalling WinXP to (my old desktop). They said the activation codes should...

    Product Validation for WinXP Home

Hey, thanks for the link! Is there any risk with buying this? I just format, install it, type in the key that comes with it and then it works?

    Product Validation for WinXP Home

Well, the reinstallation CD from Dell that came with the laptop successfully installed XP on the desktop. The product key that came with the upgrade I had originally bought for the desktop top did not work. I'm asking are there any good resellers out there that I could get a discount on it...

    Product Validation for WinXP Home

Okay, I put my stupid cap on the other day and reformatted a Dell desktop with a Dell reinstallation CD (XP Home SP1) from a Dell laptop. The desktop is at least five years old, and was upgraded to XP, whereas the laptop is only two years old and was shipped with XP originally. I still have...

    Boot from CD failed

Well, I don't know WHAT happened, but just for a laugh I attempted reformatting after I received that "hivedef.inf" error. Somehow, without removing any RAM (or any other hardware alteration for that matter), the install went through fine!

    Boot from CD failed

Thanks for the tip. I may try this later, it's already sucked up a great deal of my time. I'll be sure to let you know how it goes.

    Boot from CD failed

Frickin' Spectacular!!!! Well, now my ass is really up a creek without a paddle! Setup was chugging along, I'd deleted the old partition completely and XP was loading from the CD. Apparently "hivedif.inf" was corrupted at "Line 0." :dead:

    Boot from CD failed

Hehe, I found that, too. I'm a bit of a noob at this, I've only reformatted one other computer ever, and it took little more than going into the bios and telling the CD to boot first (Inspiron 5100). This computer has been around for five years with nary a reformat, so it was due! After...

    Boot from CD failed

Okay, I must be a glutton for punishment. I followed that link, and downloaded "Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install." The computer has all the most recent windows updates, but the reinstallation CD is for SP1, am I downloading the wrong...

    Boot from CD failed

Well, I did both, because aren't they the same thing? Holding down "del" accesses the bios. I'm telling it to boot from the CD, which is in D:, but why is it trying to access A:?? The floppy disk was eliminated from being a boot device completely. When I press +/- I end up with: 1st...

    Boot from CD failed

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but here goes ... I wanted to reformat a Dimension 4100. I inserted a Reinstallation CD provided by Dell with XP Home SP1 in the CD drive. I rebooted and followed the directions listed here...
