I have the Play TV HD and yes the supplied software only does .AVI because it's lossless and the best form to capture albeit you need a fast system and fast HD's to avoid frame loss.
You can get a number of free programs that will capture and ones like Powervcr PowerDirector, WinDVR etc work...
I have a belkin UPS and had the same issue, what worked for me is switching off the XP ups and then loading the software that comes with the UPS re boot and it should find the serial.
If you use both then they are both trying to access the port at the same time and this causes the prob...

But seriously, PE2 is a great program, I could never afford or justify Photshop so can't tell you what is different PE2 does everything you could possibly want to do to graphics and it makes reasonable very quick web pages at the touch of a button.
