I have a belkin UPS and had the same issue, what worked for me is switching off the XP ups and then loading the software that comes with the UPS re boot and it should find the serial. If you use both then they are both trying to access the port at the same time and this causes the prob...

Limiting factor is the G3 - I'd say 1024x768x32 most settings at normal will give you FPS 30 +
