You are looking to get the gstreamer packages. If you use any Debian based distro, just download the gstreamer packages from synaptic or aptitude. There are a lot of different codecs available, I chose to install all of them. Also, if you use Ubuntu, check out the Medibuntu repositories.
Once you have the codecs that can play the particular video, hit up the plugin for Mozilla. I use Totem as my media player, which in turn uses Gstreamer. The totem plugin is called totem-mozilla. Oh, and I'd just like to add getting the plugins was much easier on Ubuntu than Windows. In Windows, I'd normally get a codec pack and install that. On Ubuntu, the file was opened, I was notified the codec wasn't available and if it should fetch them. |

Personally I think Totem and gstreamer are awful. I would use the mplayerplg-in, it should support more formats.

Why compile? Go to http://www.linuxpackages.net/pkg_details.php?id=11381

What does a media player have to do to not be awful? ... play media? ... and Totem does just that. Plus gstreamer isn't part of Totem and can be used by anything that supports it.

Well the gstreamer backend doesn't handle a lot of the popular formats out there. It is getting better, but I still find mplayer with the win32codecs handles anything.

I have both Totem with Gstreamer and Mplayer, I haven't found anything that today's gstreamer can't handle.
The only thing I don't really like about Totem is how it handles skipping over files. You have to drag the bar instead of just clicking on a spot. Really helpful on those long porn movies. heh |
