It can be either. You can install the X server and Gnome/KDE/XFCE etc. and you'll have a GUI just like any modern Linux distro.

PC-BSD would be a better choice if one wants a GUI.

Superficially they're pretty much the same. The real difference is under the hood, e.g. the kernel, but they pretty much have the same subset of programs and command line utilities.

so if for instance i learned unix (which am i right in thinking is slightly harder), would i then easily be able to use linux, also can i use freebsd in a dual boot environment?
