Text-based ad-words. No popups or banners.
This isn't a hoax, people. The Lunar Jobs link was Google's April Fools joke this year. GMail is real.

Hmm.. does April Fools carry on to the following day? Coz they've mentioned the free email service on the ITV news this morning.

It's real but sounds scary (and I'm still now sure it will remain @ 1GB) ... read the 1st real explaination of how it works here, that I have seen anyways.

Firstly, I'm sure it would not remain at 1Gb capacity after 12months. Also, I'm sure there would be severe restrictions on attachments like hotmail's 1mb limit.

And yes, do expect ads in every mail you receive. Could be up to 5 (just a guess).

They would just use google adsense to make it relevent :P.

Second, i think google could sustain 1 GB. Think about it, they have enough space to index millions of sites, images, and other content.

Why does that seem scary? There are no humans reading your mail. I personally wouldn't care if a system scanned through my mail, looked for certain keywords, and inserted ads based on those keywords. Sure beats looking at annoying flashing banners and dealing with popups. Besides, you can't expect such a service to be ad-free.
Sounds reasonable to me. I really don't see any privacy concerns.

I could find a way to fill up 1 gig. That'd be easy ... a couple month on lists that send lots of files ... then it'd be very easy.
