Ati 9700Pro or nVidia FX 5800 Ultra

I am considering getting a new card. (Time to move on).

And I have been going through a number of reviews and I am choosing between ATi 9700Pro and the nVidia Fx 5800 Ultra.
The price is more than less the same here, so I just want to get the most of my money.

What are the pro's and con's of each card? All those reviews says so different... more confusing than helping.

All I know for sure is that they both are better than what I have now.

I recommend the 9700 pro or the 9800 pro, which doesn't cost much more than the 9700. Plus it only takes up one slot!

Got me there HandyBuddy! :)

What do you mean by "only taking up one slot"?

the ATI 9700 non-pro/pro and the ATI 9800 non-pro/pro only take up one slot at the back of your pc whereas the Geforce FX 5800 Ultra takes up two slots, one being the agp slot for the card installation and the other slot for the huge fan/vaccum cleaner :p

Which is why i call the Geforce FX 5800 Ultra... "Dyson 2003" :p

Ahaa!! :) hehe

Yes, I have heard all about that vaccum cleaner, but that should, or might, be gone on the 5900 then?

So it would be a better choice to pick up a 9700Pro or 9800Pro?

What is the major differences in preformance between the two ATi's?

I have no experience with ATi. Well, not since my first 4Mb one back in 1998 :)

These might help you:

Hope these help you?

Maybe in the 5900, they will remove the dyson addon pack :p

Alex

Or maybe they keep it to suck all the dust out of the PC...:)
That can be handy!

Thanks for the links Alex_is_Axel!
I will look into it straight away.

By the way... I was told that with GeForce Cards you should keep the Video BIOS cacheable disabled... any different with ATi?

Something of note for the ATI cards (I have the 9500PRO which uses the same -basic- hardware that the 9700 uses) If you have any strange problems with your computer freezing/BSOD, you have to increase the AGP voltage in BIOS from1.5volts to 1.6volts and possibly 1.7volts. I had this problem (Sapphire 9500PRO) and it took me quite a while to figure out what the hell was happening.

As for your Video Bios caching - only turn it on for PCI video cards.

Thanks!!! :D

That can be usefull.

I had no idea what that Video BIOS is, only got told to have it disabled.. but now I know what it is for:)

I have desided to get the 9800Pro. It looks like a steady and fast card. And I guess I will not have to change it in a while.... long time :)

Ive found an image of the Geforce FX 5900 for you guys, it looks like it's only going to take up one slot now which seems like a good side :)

Looks pretty nice in my opinion

Memory clock 850MHz
Memory bus width 256-bit/32-byte
Memory bandwidth ~27.20GB/sec
Pixel fillrate 3200Mpixels/sec
Texel fillrate 3200Mtexels/sec

Radeon 9800 Pro

Render pipelines 8
Texture units per pipeline 1
Shader units per pipeline 1
Core clock 380MHz
Memory clock 680MHz DDR
Memory bus width 256-bit/32-byte
Memory bandwidth ~21.76GB/sec
Pixel fillrate 3040Mpixels/sec
Texel fillrate 3040Mtexels/sec

Radeon 9700 Pro

Render pipelines 8
Texture units per pipeline 1
Shader units per pipeline 1
Core clock 325MHz
Memory clock 630MHz DDR
Memory bus width 256-bit/32-byte

that is still basically a dual slot option... or takes up as much space... if you see the ultra version of that board (which IIRC is the only one retailing @ the moment) it has that same size heat sink on the back...

on the other hand gainward does have a single slot option out there that supposedly clocks in under 30dbA... which is quite impressive... :)

hmm... render pipelines is incorrect...

in most cases it acts like an 8x1 design... even though it is truly a 4x2 design... this certainly helps in most of todays games and even in some future games due to the way pixels are processed...

since nvidia has a flexible design the 4x2 layout is not a real penalty.. but I thought I should just point out it is NOT 8x1 :D

thank you for the information Sazar, i only got this info from a website, just thought i would post it.. could be a typo maybe?

nope....

nvidia distributes their info about their card as being 8x1... :)

it ACTS like it is 8x1... in most cases... but this is due to the flexible nature of its design.. like i said it is not a penalty for nvidia to be using this setup.. it is similar to their gf4 ti series :)

a lot of websites basically regurgitate what nvidia provides them... so of course they may inadvertantly be putting out moderately incorrect information...

thats all..

just want to point out I am really royally p!ssed @ nvidia right now for some more crap they seem to be putting forth and promoting.. :(

I'll try and keep rants off the boards... but it is getting really hard...

I am in the same boat. I been a Nvidia supporter since the TNT series.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
